Houston Projects to get major new fundingapproved for Texas transportation highways

The Texas Transportation Commission approved billions of dollars worth of additional projects at a meeting March 28, and Houston is getting a major chunk.

The Houston Chronicle reports $8.9 billion has been approved for 230 projects statewide as part of Texas’ unified transportation plan, which is updated in phases each year. The plan guides the state’s highway, maritime and aviation spending.

About $1.32 billion of the funding will go to Houston — most of which will go toward a major overhaul of Interstate 45, but other projects are included, the Chronicle reports. The I-45 overhaul includes seven separate projects that will realign the highway around downtown, moving it from the western side to the eastern side. The projects aren’t slated to begin construction until late 2020.
